What began as a portrait of one surfer became a story about the whole crew. Queens of the Break follows a tight-knit friend group of Central Coast surf legends whose decades-long bond helped shape the lineup women surf in today.

DIRECTORS

Jo Anna Edmison is a filmmaker and photographer working as a Junior Art Director at STADIUM Creative Group. Film is her love language, but her work is format-agnostic, spanning 16mm, Super 8, and digital as she leans further into directing. and her films have received Best Student Documentary honors at the SLO Film Festival and Big Sur Film Festival for Stoke Chasers (2020), plus Best Documentary Short at the SLO Film Festival for Freedom of Flow (2022).

Jordyn Romero is an award-winning documentary director and producer focused on stories of womanhood, identity, and the human spirit. Her film ​ We Are Like Waves (2022), about one of the first female surfers in Sri Lanka, received distribution through the Los Angeles Times, and she has since directed and produced work internationally and for brands including Patagonia, Salomon, The North Face, and Specialized.

Queens of the Break premiered at Mountainfilm in 2023 and has since screened at the Santa Barbara Surf Film Festival, Coast Film Festival, SLO Film Festival, and the Women’s Surf Film Festival. With the short’s momentum, additional footage has been shot with plans to expand the project into a deeper, longer cut.
